Little Treasury Jewelers
Little Treasury Jewelers - bringing the best of the high-end watch and jewelry industry to a growing list of loyal clients.
For the past fourteen years, Little Treasury Jewelers, located in the Baltimore suburb of Gambrills, Maryland, has been bringing the best of the high-end watch and jewelry industry to a growing list of loyal clients. Many of the store’s customers have even been known to travel across state lines for the renowned customer service, impressive selection, and many special events Little Treasury hosts with brand partners.
Opened in 1996 by the husband-and-wife team of Steve and Linda Hammalian, Little Treasury is truly a family affair that draws on each of the owner’s talents and experiences. Linda has worked in the retail business her entire career, and specifically jewelry since 1996. Steve, a longtime watch lover, took a rather unusual path to come to operate his own watch store. His resume includes a number of diverse experiences and positions. He has a Ph.D. in Linguistics, worked as a college professor, was as an editor and writer, and has even been an executive for an environmental consulting firm.
To showcase their thirteen fine watch brands and selection of high-end jewelry, a list that includes Roberto Coin, Hearts on Fire and Simon G, the Hammalians occupy a friendly and modern 1,500-square-foot retail space that some have called “quaint.” As a complement to the brick and mortar location, Steve and Linda recently launched a web site for the store, in addition to a presence on Facebook and Twitter.
“We have actually launched our web-based business in the past year, and sales are increasing every month,” says Steve. “We see it as a natural extension of our personal service, however, and many of our out-of-state customers actually seek us out for a visit when they happen to be in the region.”
Steve cites Ball Watch as the most popular brand at Little Treasury, which he attributes to a number of factors, including fit and finish, accuracy, service, wide selection and unbelievable pricing. “From parent company to distributor to retailer, it is really a team thing—an exemplary company to work with,” says Steve.
Little Treasury teamed with Ball Watch last year to initiate the concept for the firm’s Baltimore & Ohio Railroad commemorative watch. After two years of working with Ball Watch USA and the firm’s Swiss offices, the Ball B&O First Mile watch was released in August 2009 at a special event at the B&O Railroad Museum in Baltimore, which Little Treasury Jewelers hosted. Plans for another B&O Railroad watch are in the works, and Steve hopes that it will be ready this year.
“We think it highly unusual for an authorized dealer to be able to suggest a watch and be involved throughout its development, including a chance to provide fundamental feedback on a prototype in Basel last year,” says Steve.
Little Treasury serves a diverse group of clients, but when asked to describe the typical customer, he says that they are “professionals, frequently in the IT arena; military/government types; heads of small companies. Most own more than five good watches, but it is not uncommon to encounter those with more than 40.” Steve fondly speaks of one customer who traveled 700 miles round trip to the store in the rain—on his motorcycle—just to examine at a Ball Watch in person. After thinking it over for a few days, the customer went ahead with the purchase.
With a commitment to providing loyal customers with fine timepieces and scintillating jewelry, and the individualized customer service they’ve come to expect, it’s little surprise that customers from the Baltimore area, and from many other places, continue to flock to Little Treasury Jewelers.
