Juan Pablo Montoya Teams Up with Artisans de Genève

(Sponsored post) What drives racecar champion Juan Pablo Montoya is his desire to be the best at what he does. Perhaps that’s why he chose to create a watch with Artisans de Genève, the Geneva-based watchmaker that offers exclusive watch modifications based on request for a very limited number of timepieces.

“Artisans de Genève embodies what I wanted in somebody who would build a watch for me,” he says. “They are that somebody that was happy to remove limits to how a watch should be built.”

A passionate watch collector, Montoya has been particularly attracted to Rolex timepieces, specifically the Daytona.

“I probably have seven or eight of them,” he explains. “I won the Rolex 24 three times, and the Daytona is a watch that really relates to all of my racing. So I was amazed when the idea came along to do a skeleton Daytona. Artisans de Genève went far beyond anything I could ask for.”

What the watchmaker did was create "La Montoya," a skeletonized version of the Rolex Daytona.

The Artisans de Genève "La Montoya" features a Rolex caliber 4130 that its watchmakers deconstruct piece by piece, cutting and finishing each of the watches by hand at the Artisans de Genève headquarters in the Vallée de Joux.

Expert finisher Philippe Narbel perfects each caliber with fine bevelling details, giving them a unique touch and making each of them one of a kind.

The red arrow chronograph hand is sandblasted while the counter hands are now specially shaped, customized pieces. And, like the hands, each chronograph counter is individually painted by hand with the colors of Colombia, Juan Pablo Montoya’s home country.

The resulting watches, which debuted last week as a limited edition of fifty pieces, were inspected—and highly praised—by Montoya himself.

“The more I look at this timepiece, the more I like it,” he adds.

All modifications and finishes are completed in its Swiss workshops. Artisans de Genève SA is an independent company that operates without affiliation to any other watch brand.
