GoS highlights its use of black Damascus steel in Skadi, the Swedish watchmaker’s latest collection. GoS complements the watch’s distinctive black Damascus steel case with red gold and a glacier-blue luminous mother-of-pearl dial.
GoS co-founder and designer Patrik Sjögren says he has combined all these materials and techniques together into one watch to recall the primary colors amid the landscape ruled by Skadi, the winter goddess in Norse mythology.
Skadi, made as a limited edition of five watches, continues Sjögren’s horological trek across Sweden and its natural beauty, which has included stops in the Scandinavian country’s forests, glaciers and mountains.
As with so many GoS watches, Skadi’s 44.5mm case and its lugs are engraved. Here, GoS matches those engravings with similar engravings on the manual-wind movement. Both are done by master knifemaker Anders Hedlund, who also does the engraving work on the GoS Sarek Trollius. Here, Hedlund engraves both the sides of the lugs with a Viking knot pattern and the Damascus steel movement bridges.
With Skadi, GoS introduces local craftsman to the GoS collective. Master goldsmith Peter deWit cast the gold parts for the Skadi case and also fit the blue sapphires in all the dial’s indexes and in the crown.
You may recall that GoS developed its specialized black Damascus steel last year when it teamed with Singer Reimagined to create the Track1 Black Damascus, which we will soon see at auction at OnlyWatch 2019. GoS says that its particular dark PVD coating emphasizes the patterns in the Damascus while also reflecting the light.
Echoing the impressive dial illumination technique developed by Patrik Sjögren and introduced in the Sarek Glacier earlier this year, the Skadi dial is made from white mother-of-pearl that is both colored and backlit thanks to a dollop of SuperLuminova beneath.
GoS will make five Skadi watches, each delivered on a moose leather strap and fitted with a Swiss-made 18-karat gold folding buckle. Each watch arrives in a Swedish walnut box handcrafted near GoS headquarters. Price: $42,000.
