Ever since its acquisition by Frederique Constant SA in 2002, the Alpina brand has had a sporty identity that served as a nice juxtaposition to the parent firm’s classical design approach. As a recent continuation of that active legacy, the firm this spring announced the new Sailing Collection, which was inspired by Alpina’s collaboration with the Italian Extreme 40 Catamaran team Niceforyou.
Alpina developed automatic yacht timer caliber AL-880, based on the Sellita SW500 automatic chronograph movement, to power the new collection. In addition to the Yacht Timer, the sailing collection is also available as a simple three-hander. All of the timepieces in the collection come in a stainless steel case that is reminiscent of earlier Alpina designs, and come with the choice of a rubber strap, a metal bracelet, or a metal mesh bracelet.
The collection was inspired by the Extreme 40 Catamaran sailed by team Niceforyou, whose skipper, Alberto Barovier, won the America’s Cup in 2010 as a member of team BMW Oracle Racing. His new team, which includes many of Italy’s best sailors, will compete in nine venues in the Extreme Sailing Series this year. Visit www.nicesailingteam.com for more information.
The Alpina Sailing timepieces will be offered in limited editions that will be sold with miniature replicas of the Extreme 40 Catamaran.
